Hornberg Castle

Hornberg Castle, like the town, was founded in the 11th and 12th centuries after the area was cleared by the Counts of Calw.

It was built by the Lords of Fautsburg, who were vassals of the Counts of Calw. In 1252, a Heinrich von Hornberg is mentioned in documents. The Hornbergs died out in 1399, and their property was divided between the Counts of Baden and the Counts of Württemberg. The castle fell into disrepair over time and is mentioned as a ruin in documents in 1603 when it was sold to Württemberg. Some remains of the curtain wall of the keep and the foundation walls of the palas were preserved. The keep was rebuilt in 1958, and between then and 1971, further buildings were reconstructed by the state of Baden-Württemberg. These were used by the State Forest Administration. This was followed by the conversion to a forest school home. In 1993, the complex was renovated.

Hornberg Castle is located south of Hornberg at a corner of a plateau. The still clearly visible moat is now an access point to a hiking trail. A new building was erected next to the actual castle grounds. Next to the building is a section of reconstructed defensive wall, forming an inner courtyard between the palas and the restored keep. The courtyard is only accessible to guests of the forest school home.
