Hornberg Castle, like the town, was founded in the 11th and 12th centuries after the area was cleared by the Counts of Calw.

It was built by the Lords of Fautsburg, who were vassals of the Counts of Calw. In 1252, a Heinrich von Hornberg is mentioned in documents.
