The remains of the Castle can be visited
Horní Castle
Horní Castle, also known as Hauenstein, is a historic castle complex in the Czech Republic, rising on a rocky spur. Originally founded in the 13th century, it served to protect an important trade route through the Eger Valley and was repeatedly redesigned over the centuries, making it a remarkable testament to medieval and Neo-Gothic architecture.
History+
The foundation of Hauenstein Castle likely occurred in the 13th century by royal decree. It was first mentioned in a document in 1320 with Burgrave Nikolaus Winkler as its owner. In 1470, the Satanéř of Drahovice took over the complex, followed by the Schlick counts in 1528, who owned it until 1663 before it was sold to Prince Julius Heinrich of Saxe-Lauenburg. From 1839, the castle was owned by the Buquoy family, who undertook extensive renovations in the English Neo-Gothic style, including its expansion into a spacious castle and the construction of a Neo-Gothic chapel. After 1945, the castle was expropriated and fell into disrepair until it came under the ownership of the municipality of Krásný Les in 1992. In 2000, Pavel Palacký took over the heavily damaged property and began its restoration.
