Hülshoff Castle is a moated castle in Münsterland, known as the birthplace of the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. Its name is derived from the holly, which is called “Hülse” in Low German. The complex is situated between Havixbeck and the Münster suburb of Roxel and has been part of the municipality of Havixbeck since 1975.

History+

The complex was first mentioned in documents in the 11th century as the manor “Zum Hülshoff”. Since 1417, it has been the ancestral seat of the Barons Droste zu Hülshoff. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the castle underwent extensive renovations, alterations, and extensions in the Baroque style, using Baumberg sandstone and brickwork. The Gärtnersturm, built in 1628, features an equestrian relief depicting Heinrich I. von Droste-Hülshoff, who was involved in the conquest of Münster from the Anabaptists.
