In the east of Schwerfen, a district of Zülpich in the Euskirchen district, lies Irnich Castle, a four-winged moated castle with an irregular, rectangular layout. Originally developed in the 14th century from a manor with Roman roots, it is now privately owned and used for agricultural purposes.

History+

The origins of Irnich Castle likely trace back to a Celtic-Roman manor located near the Roman road Cologne-Zülpich-Trier, which continued to exist during the Frankish period. In the 14th century, it evolved into a castle, first documented in 1373 with Daniel von Eirnich (Irnich). Through marriage, the castle passed to the Berge zu Blens family in 1454, who reportedly had it rebuilt in 1484 before selling the knight's seat in 1491 to the Bock von Lichtenberg family.
