Kallmuth Castle
Kallmuth Castle is a castle in Kallmuth, a district of Mechernich in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The first knight of Kallmuth was mentioned in a document as early as 1285. It can therefore be assumed that the castle was built in the 13th century. In the 14th century, a Henricus de Calenmunt was mentioned. In 1515, Johann von Kaelmoutten is named as the last of the lineage. After that, the von Friemersdorf, known as Pützfeld, were the owners until 1749. At this time, however, they already lived in their house in Kirspenich. Kallmuth Castle was probably leased. In 1770, the castle was divided between Hilger Dahmen and Baron von Gymnich zu Kallmuth. The latter sold his share in 1780 to Count Ambrosius von Spee. In the first half of the 19th century, the castle was only classified as a leased property. For several decades, it came into the possession of Wilhelm Freiherr von Syberg zu Eicks and Wilhelm von Lommessem. In 1908, Ambrosius Schmitz bought a part. The Schmitz family remained owners until 1989. The northeastern half of the castle buildings belonged to Karl Seidenfaden.
The castle is located directly next to the tower of St. Georg's Church. The farm buildings were rebuilt in the 19th and 20th centuries. The two-story rubble stone building formerly had a gabled roof, which has been replaced by a lean-to roof. From the west, a staircase with a round-arched door leads to the first residential floor. Sandstone corbels with a quarter-circle profile originally supported the wooden beam ceilings. The similarly designed room on the second floor has been reduced in height by the lean-to roof.
The castle was entered on July 18, 1989, under No. 71, in the list of architectural monuments in Mechernich.
