Kallmuth Castle

The first documented mention of a knight of Kallmuth in 1285 suggests that the castle was built in the 13th century. In the 14th century, a Henricus de Calenmunt appeared in the records. The Kaelmoutten family line ended in 1515 with Johann von Kaelmoutten. Subsequently, the von Friemersdorf genannt Pützfeld family took ownership until 1749, though by that time they were already residing in Kirspenich and Kallmuth Castle was likely leased. In 1770, the castle was divided between Hilger Dahmen and Baron von Gymnich zu Kallmuth. The latter sold his share in 1780 to Count Ambrosius von Spee. In the first half of the 19th century, the castle primarily served as a leased property and for several decades changed hands to Wilhelm Freiherr von Syberg zu Eicks and Wilhelm von Lommessem. Ambrosius Schmitz acquired a part of the complex in 1908, and his family remained owners until 1989. The northeastern half of the castle buildings belonged to Karl Seidenfaden. Since July 18, 1989, Kallmuth Castle has been listed as a historical monument.
