In the northeastern city center of Kempen in the Viersen district, Kempen Castle is a former territorial castle of the Archbishops of Cologne. It is considered one of the best-preserved Cologne archiepiscopal castles of the 14th century, with original building fabric, even though it underwent extensive neo-Gothic alterations in the 19th century.

The origins of Kempen Castle date back to the Middle Ages, though a precise founding document is missing. For a long time, 1316 was assumed to be the construction year, but more recent findings suggest a renewal between 1396 and 1400, as the castle was already mentioned in documents in 1347. Under Archbishop Friedrich von Saarwerden, a reconstruction and expansion was carried out by master builder Johann Hundt at the end of the 14th century.
