Kessenich Castle, a two-part moated castle, is situated on the northern edge of the eponymous district of Euskirchen in North Rhine-Westphalia.

History+

The first documented mention of Kessenich Castle occurred in 1339, when Otto von Kessenic enfeoffed it to the Margrave of Jülich. This happened under the influence of the Jülich family, who were expanding their territorial power in the region and also acquired Euskirchen in 1355. In 1363, Otto's heir, Ludwig von Kessenich, sold the property to Reinhart von Binsfeld. Although the Binsfeld family later faced financial difficulties, they were able to fully utilize the castle again by 1514. Heinrich von Binsfeld zu Stamge, a Princely Councillor and Marshall, had the medieval castle redesigned starting in 1575.
