Kirchberg Castle

The history of Kirchberg dates back to an early period, with a Count Arterius I. mentioned in a document from Mallersdorf Monastery as early as 812. A legend even suggests its foundation as a Roman fortress in 292, though no written evidence supports this claim. Following the extinction of the Counts of Kirchberg in 1234, the area became an administrative district (Pflegegerichtsbezirk) of the Duchy of Bavaria-Landshut. The ducal administrator, responsible for governance and justice, subsequently resided at the castle. The current structure was built in the 14th century by the Lords of Kirchberg. For the restoration work carried out in the 1990s, the owners received the Heritage Award from the Hypo-Kulturstiftung München.
