Kreuzen Castle

The origins of Kreuzen Castle date back to around 900 AD, when it was likely built as a refuge. Pilgrim von Creutzen was first documented as its owner in 1125, followed by Hermann von Creutzen in 1209. Later, the Volkensdorfer family inhabited the complex, which was a princely fief in 1282 and divided into a front and a rear castle. After the Volkensdorfer line died out around 1489, the castle passed to the brothers Siegmund and Heinrich von Prüschenk. In 1532, Helfrich von Meggau reunited the two parts of the castle and acquired them as a free property. During the Ottoman threat around 1594, Kreuzen served as a defensive and refuge castle.
