Küchen Castle (Ahlen)
The moated castle Haus Küchen is a former noble residence of the Counts of the Mark near Ahlen in Westphalia.
Haus Küchen was first mentioned in 1392 in the feudal registers of the Counts of the Mark. At that time, the estate with a moat was owned by the von Cloedt family. The Cleves-Markish fief passed to the von Mallinckrodt family in 1502 through the marriage of the heiress Elseke to Hermann von Mallinckrodt, remaining in their possession for over three centuries. The von Mallinckrodt family belonged to the ancient nobility of the Mark and took their name from Haus Mallinckrodt near Wetter an der Ruhr.
In 1829, the house passed by inheritance into the possession of the judicial commissioner Johann Henrich Rath from Sassenberg. In 1868, Haus Küchen was sold by Auguste Rath to Ferdinand Limbrock.
Architecture+
The two-winged manor house features an angled outdoor staircase. The south wing dates from the 16th century and is equipped with a stepped gable. The east wing, from the 18th century, has a half-hipped roof and a coat of arms plaque. With financial assistance from the State Conservator of Westphalia-Lippe, Haus Küchen was restored in 1962–1965. Today, the former knight's estate is privately owned and used as an equestrian center.
