Kühlseggen Castle

The first documented mention of an owner, Gobelin von Cudilsheggin, dates back to 1312. In 1351, Arnold von Umbescheiden was named as a successor, followed by Walfraff von Scheiffart von Merode in 1368. Under his family, the castle was expanded into a manorial seat eligible for the regional assembly until the early 16th century. Through marriage, the estate passed to Goswin Brent von Vernich, but inheritance disputes led the Imperial Chamber Court to award the castle to the Raitz von Frentz family in 1613. They sold the war-damaged property in 1616 to Cologne's mayor Johann Monumet. After further changes of ownership, the Cologne Jesuits acquired the castle in 1746 and renovated it.
