History+
As early as 800 BC, archaeological finds show an early settlement of the castle plateau. In 878, the property was first documented when it was gifted to the Bavarian monastery of Altötting. Later, in 1028, Count Ozzi became the landlord, and under the Counts of Sternberg, an initial castle was built here. In 1330, the dominion passed to the Counts of Ortenburg, before Landskron first appeared by name in documents in 1351. After a possession by the Habsburgs and a pledge to the Counts of Cilli, the castle was gifted by Emperor Maximilian I to the Order of St. George in 1511. A fire in 1542 led to the castle not being rebuilt until Christoph Khevenhüller acquired it in the same year.
