Lichtenwerth Castle
Lichtenwerth Castle (also spelled Lichtwehr, Lichtwert, Lichtwerth, Lichtenwert, and Lichtenwörth) is located between Münster and Brixlegg in the municipality of Münster, Kufstein district in Tyrol. The syllable "werth", meaning "island", suggests that the castle once stood on an island in the Inn river. Due to the regular structure and bricked-up Romanesque windows, its construction can be dated to the 12th century. The first documented mentions occurred as early as 1212 and 1249.
The main castle, on a rectangular plan, includes a bailey with outbuildings to the west. To the east are the keep and a three-story palas, which were renovated in the 18th century. The castle's defensive tower was truncated in the 17th century. Special features of the complex include the vaulted kitchen with its original preserved furnishings, the preserved battlements, the Baroque castle theater (1765), and the clock above the inner gate. Also preserved is the chamber of a judge who once had his seat here at the castle. The castle chapel, which was decorated with Rococo stucco in 1776, represents the easternmost outpost of the Diocese of Innsbruck.
Since 1879, Lichtenwerth Castle has been privately owned by the von Inama-Sternegg family and cannot be visited.
