Liebenau Castle, also known as Schloss Liebenau, is a historic moated castle located in the Upper Palatinate municipality of Zandt in the Bavarian district of Cham. Situated on an artificially constructed castle hill, it represents a typical example of a regional noble residence.

History+

The origins of Liebenau Castle likely date back to the early 13th century, when it was built by the Lords of Liebenau. The first documented mention of a fortified complex at this location appears around 1311 with a “Hainricus Ramsperger de Libennoe”. In 1472, Augustin Fischbeck, who had acquired and expanded the complex, was granted the Hofmark and noble freedom by Duke Albrecht IV of Bavaria-Munich. Fischbeck played a significant role in the expansion and reconstruction of the castle. After 1500, the castle changed hands several times, passing to the Paulsdorfer, von Altrandsberg, and von Nothafft families, which marked the end of its time as an independent Hofmark.
