The moated castle Liebenau, also called Schloss Liebenau or Schloss Grub, is a moated castle in the district of Grub on an artificial castle hill at about 500 meters above sea level in the Liebenau district of the Upper Palatinate municipality of Zandt in the Bavarian district of Cham.
The moated castle was probably built at the beginning of the 13th century by the Lords of Liebenau. Around 1311, a "Hainricus Ramsperger de Libennoe" was mentioned in connection with a fortified complex, on which "Andre Räckell von Liebenaw" certainly also resided in 1440.
In 1472, Duke Albrecht IV of Bavaria-Munich granted Augustin Fischbeck, "who bought and built the seat Liebenaw", the Hofmark and noble freedom with a document. Augustin Fischbeck expanded and developed the complex.
After 1500, the castle came into the possession of Hans Paulsdorfer, the Lords of Altrandsberg and the Lords of Nothafft, after which the period as an independent Hofmark ended. Today the complex is privately owned and used for agriculture.
Complex+
The castle complex, situated on a hill about three meters high and 40 by 40 meters in size, is surrounded by a ten-meter-wide moat and has an access in the southwest. In the eastern corner is the two-story main building made of quarry stone with a shallow-pitched gable roof, which can be dated to the period after 1472 at its core.
The regionally typical noble residence is mentioned in 1606 as "walled box ... surrounded by a moat" and in 1737 as "seat and walled box surrounded by a moat". In more modern times, the farm building located in the northwest part was altered and the defensive walls including the gate were removed.
