Linz Castle stands on the Rhine in Linz am Rhein. Originally built as a bulwark and customs castle, it is now a testament to medieval history.

Shortly after Linz was granted town rights between 1304 and 1332 by the Archbishop of Cologne Heinrich von Virneburg, Elector Engelbert von der Mark began construction of the castle in 1365. This occurred after he had moved the customs rights from Andernach to Linz. The construction of the castle was costly, so it had to be pledged to the Archdiocese of Trier for eight years after its completion. Initially, the complex probably included a northwest tower and a castle house. After a siege in 1475 during the Neuss War, the castle suffered damage.
