Linzenich Castle

Linzenich Castle is a moated castle in Linzenich, a district of Zülpich in the Euskirchen district, North Rhine-Westphalia.

The castle is first mentioned in 1357, when a Teyle von Linzenich, a so-called local nobleman, is mentioned. At the beginning of the 15th century, Werner von Merode became the owner. In 1421, he sold the "vreyen hoff" to Margaretha von Ellerborn, née Merode. At that time, the estate was therefore exempt from tithes and taxes, but had no castle rights. In 1472, the von Cloyn family was mentioned as lords, who died out in 1642. In the same year, the estate was completely destroyed in the Thirty Years' War. Through inheritance, the castle came to the von Keverberg family. After a reconstruction, the estate was damaged by an earthquake in 1755. In the 19th century, the castle changed civilian owners several times.

Today, the castle appears as a large manor farm. The moats still carry water towards the street side.

The outbuildings of the formerly two-part moated castle are new constructions from the end of the 19th century. Half of the barn is built into the original moat zone. The current two-story building on a high plinth floor still appears representatively castle-like. The stately portal with stairs and bridge, the clear axial division, and the high hip roof are clearly intended to recall the noble past.
