Lisberg Castle

The origins of Lisberg Castle date back to the 8th century. In 820, it was first documented as “Elitzberg” when the lord of the castle, Hiltuvin, donated land to Fulda Abbey. It is presumed that the castle originally served as a count's castle to protect the Volkfeldgau. The noble family of the Lords of Lisberg first appeared around 1200. In 1398, Margrave Friedrich VI of Ansbach received the main castle as a fief, while the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg was granted the village and the outer bailey. Around 1500, Lisberg Castle became a ganerbenburg (a castle shared by several families). Fabian von Lisberg was the last representative of his noble lineage. Ownership changed frequently; among the owners were the Lords of Lauffenholz, von Thünfeld, von Aschhausen, von Giech, and von Milz.
