Lohmar Castle

Around the mid-14th century, Count Dietrich II of Loos and Chiney, Lord of Heinsberg, Blankenberg, and Löwenburg, had the Gothic moated castle of Lohmar built, possibly on the foundations of an older manor. A document from his nephew, Count Godart of Loen, dated 1361, suggests that the construction was unlawful. Only due to his friendship with the Count of Berg was Dietrich not forced to demolish the castle immediately. Godart committed to using the castle solely as a residence and not to fortify it further. By 1400 at the latest, the castle passed to the von Ro(i)de family, who initially mortgaged it to Gerhard von Reven and Juetgin von Hatzfeld, eventually selling it in 1444. The von Reven family owned the castle until the end of the 17th century.
