In the western part of the market town of Maissau in the Hollabrunn district, Maissau Castle stands, a well-preserved hilltop castle in Lower Austria. Its history dates back to the 12th century, and it is still inhabited today by the Abensperg and Traun family.

History+

The first documented mention of Maissau Castle occurred in 1122, when Rudolf and Rozinus von Maissau were named. The Lords of Maissau were a ministerial family who owned the castle until 1440. After the male line died out, the castle passed through inheritance to the Lords of Eckartsau and later to the Zelking family. In 1526, Magdalena von Zelking inherited the Maissau lordship and married Sebastian Herr von Traun. Since then, the castle has been continuously owned by the Abensperg and Traun family, who were elevated to Imperial Counts in 1653.
