Markt Castle

The origins of Burg Markt likely date back to the 14th century. It once formed a central part of the dominions of the Rechbergers and later the Pappenheimers. In 1508, Jakob Fugger acquired the castle along with the lordship of Biberbach. Just 17 years later, in 1525, he had the complex converted into a palace. From this transformation, the keep, the extensive wall system, and the Onoldsbacher Tower remain today. The ensemble also includes the Catholic castle chapel of St. John the Baptist, built between 1738 and 1739 by Simon Rothmiller, a former chaplain's house, and various farmstead buildings from the 19th century.
