Marmagen Castle

Marmagen Castle is located in the Marmagen district of the municipality of Nettersheim in the Euskirchen district (North Rhine-Westphalia). Marmagen Castle, at Burgstraße 12, was entered into the monument list of the municipality of Nettersheim on March 8, 1983, under number 8.

The homestead, still referred to as a castle today, stands in the middle of the village between new buildings. An exact construction date cannot be determined, but a local nobleman named Konrad von Marmagen is already mentioned in 1297. Further noblemen from this family do not appear again until the 15th century. It is assumed that they could not assert themselves against Steinfeld Abbey, which owned estates here. Since the 18th century, the castle has been in bourgeois possession.

The two-story building consists of plastered quarry stone and is accessible through the round stair tower on the courtyard side. In the left part there is an older tower-like building from the Middle Ages. Only a few old window frames have been preserved. Most windows are of more recent date. According to Herzog, the oldest castle probably stood freely and was surrounded by moats, which then disappeared in the 18th century when it was converted into a homestead.
