Mauterndorf Castle in the municipality of the same name in the Lungau region of Salzburg, Austria, is a structure whose origins trace back to Roman times. For centuries, it served to secure trade routes.

History+

As early as 326 AD, a Roman fort is believed to have existed on this site, protecting a Roman road and serving as the seat of the provincial administrator before its destruction during the Migration Period. A deed of gift from Emperor Henry II in 1002 confirms the establishment of a toll station. The castle was first documented in 1253, the same year the keep was erected. In the 15th century, Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach and Cathedral Provost Burkhard von Weißpriach expanded the complex, which served as an administrative center for the cathedral chapter. In 1806, the castle became state property.
