Michelstadt Castle, often also known as Kellerei, is a castle complex in Michelstadt in the Odenwald. Originally developed from a Franconian manor, its predecessor was built in the 10th century and destroyed in 1307. The current complex, which largely dates from the 14th-century reconstruction and further building measures in the 16th and 17th centuries, forms the former outer bailey, while the original core castle is no longer preserved.

History+

The origins of the complex possibly date back to an Alamannic noble court. In 741, the Michelstadt royal estate came into the possession of Bishop Burkhart of Würzburg through a donation and returned to the crown after his death. Emperor Louis the Pious gifted the Michelstadt March to Einhard in 815, who likely had buildings erected here and expanded the complex into a fortified manor. After Einhard's death in 840, the property passed to Lorsch Abbey. Around 950, Abbot Gerbodo of Lorsch had a stone house built. In 1307, Count Palatine Rudolf I destroyed the town and castle.
