Montreal Castle (‏قلعة الشوبك‎)

The castle was built in 1115 by Baldwin I of Jerusalem after he conquered Aqaba during a campaign. Its position allowed control over trade and pilgrim flows. Around 1118, it became the center of the Lordship of Oultrejordain and was granted to Roman of Le Puy. After his rebellion in 1134, the fief passed to Pagan the Butler, and later to his nephew Maurice of Montreal. In 1161, Philip of Milly received the lordship, with the center being moved to Kerak. Under Raynald of Châtillon, who ruled from 1176, the castle was used as a base for attacking caravans and even for building ships to attack Mecca. This led to a siege by Saladin's brother al-Adil in 1187. The castle finally fell in May 1189 after a two-year siege, as the attackers could not use siege engines due to the hill's topography.

Montreal Castle is located in Shoubak, in the Ma'an district in the southern region of Jordan, at an elevation of approximately 1375 m above sea level.

The ruins of Montreal Castle are now accessible to visitors. They include extensive remains, such as a three-aisled church and a smaller chapel. Parts of two of the original three curtain walls are discernible. An Ayyubid palace in the northern part of the core complex is also preserved. Extensive excavations and restoration work are currently underway.
