Münchhausen Castle, the oldest fortress in the municipality of Wachtberg, is a historical structure in the Rhein-Sieg district. Originally designed as a moated castle, it has preserved its medieval elements.

History+

The first documented mention of Münchhausen Castle can be found in the Prüm Urbarium from 893, where it is listed as property of the Imperial Abbey of Prüm. Later, it passed into the possession of the Counts of Are-Hochstaden. In 1246, the castle came into the possession of the Electorate of Cologne through the Hochstaden donation and subsequently served as a bulwark and, at times, as a customs station along the Coronation Road. In 1525, Bartholomäus von der Leyen from the noble family of von der Leyen acquired the castle and its sheep farm.
