On the edge of the market town of Nassenfels in the Upper Bavarian district of Eichstätt lies Nassenfels Castle, a former moated castle. Despite numerous alterations and losses, it is considered one of Bavaria's most significant castle complexes.

History+

As early as the 2nd century AD, the area of present-day Nassenfels was a market town, protected by a small fort. The origins of Nassenfels Castle may lie in the Hungarian invasions of the 10th century, when the ramparts of the old fortification were expanded into a defensive castle. Since the High Middle Ages, the site belonged to the Prince-Bishopric of Eichstätt. The castle was first documented in 1245. The current appearance of the castle largely dates back to expansions under Bishops Konrad II von Pfeffenhausen (1297-1305) and Friedrich IV von Oettingen (around 1400). In 1699, the Kastenhaus (tithe house) was built as an administrative building.
