Neidenstein Castle

Neidenstein Castle was first documented in 1319 as an imperial fief of the Lords of Venningen. This family, whose Venningen-Neidenstein line resided here, produced figures, including Grand Masters of the Teutonic Order and bishops. In the 16th century, the castle underwent expansions, including the development of the outer bailey. Wall paintings in the palas from 1516 and the manor house with a stair tower from 1538 date from this period. After the extinction of the Venningen-Neidenstein line in 1611, ownership passed to the Venningen-Hilsbach line. In the late 18th century, a period of decay began, which was halted around 1900 with restoration work. These efforts continued from 1960 onwards.
