On a ridge above the town of Hohenems in Vorarlberg, Austria, lies Neu-Ems Castle, also known as “Schloss Glopper.”

History+

In 1343, Knight Ulrich I von Ems, with imperial permission, had this new castle built. It was intended to provide a secure retreat for his large family during a turbulent period, not far from the already existing Alt-Ems fortress. During the Appenzell War in 1407, Neu-Ems Castle suffered its first destruction but was immediately rebuilt. A chapel established on the ground floor in 1603 is no longer preserved today, except for two pointed-arch windows; its associated winged altar has been in the Tyrolean State Museum since 1835.
