Neuhaus Castle

The first documented mention of Burg Neuhaus occurred in 1371. After a construction period of two years, the complex was completed in 1372 as the “New House.” The builder was Duke Magnus the Younger of Braunschweig, who had it erected as a counter-castle to the possessions of the von Bartensleben family, who had become disloyal to him. From 1423, the castle served as the knightly seat of the Rothehof line of the von Bartensleben family. Until the mid-16th century, it fulfilled military functions and withstood an attack by Duke Otto of Lüneburg in 1464. In 1552, the castle was shelled by troops of Count Vollrad von Mansfeld, which caused damage, but the conquest failed. After this event, the castle was converted into a ducal Brunswick administrative building and housed an agricultural estate with a brewery and distillery. In the 20th century, it served as a Reichssportschule (national sports school) and later as a children's home before passing into the possession of the city of Wolfsburg in 1981.
