Obbendorf Castle, a former knight's estate, is located in Hambach, a district of Niederzier in the Düren district. The complex now houses a hotel-restaurant and is a four-winged building enclosing a rectangular inner courtyard.

History+

Obbendorf was first documented in 893 in the Prüm Urbar. The first known owner was Knight Reinhard von Oppendorp, whose name appeared in 1301. Between 1350 and 1481, the castle was owned by the Schellart family, who were related to Reinhard von Oppendorp. In 1404, Johann Schellart de Oppendorf, ducal steward, was additionally enfeoffed with Gürzenich Castle. The ownership then passed to Hermann von Hammerstein in 1481, whose family remained owners until the early 17th century.
