Oberkapfenberg Castle in Styria, originally built as a residential and administrative seat, now serves as a venue for cultural events and houses a restaurant.

History+

The first documented mention of a fortification at this site, then known as “Chaffenberch,” dates back to 1173. In the 13th century, the Counts of Stubenberg erected the current castle complex. Around 1550, the castle was converted into a Renaissance fortress. After the Counts of Stubenberg relocated their residence in 1739, the castle gradually fell into disrepair. An initial reconstruction into a castle hotel began in 1953, but after a bankruptcy in 1985, the castle stood empty again. The municipality of Kapfenberg acquired the complex in 1992, after which an association promoted its restoration. In 1994, the castle restaurant was opened.
