Oberranna Castle
Oberranna Castle, also known as Ranna Castle, is a historical structure on the border between the Wachau and Waldviertel regions in Lower Austria. Its distinctiveness lies in the combination of a fortified church with a castle, where the church originally assumed the primary defensive role for the smaller castle.
History+
The exact date of the castle's construction is unknown, but it existed before 1070, when the Lords of Grie acquired the complex and subsequently called themselves “von Ranna”. An early representative was Pilgrim von Grie-Rauhnah. Later, Waldo von Reun stipulated that his estates should pass to Margrave Leopold III after his death, but changed this in favor of his family after his recovery. A legal dispute was decided in Leopold's favor, who transferred part of the estates to his sister Gerbirg. She moved her residence to Ranna in 1120 and had a Romanesque fortified church built.
