In Berkum, a district of Wachtberg in the Rhein-Sieg-Kreis, Burg Odenhausen originated as a motte-and-bailey castle in the 11th century. It evolved from a medieval moated castle to a Renaissance complex, with its moats still fed by springs today.

History+

The first documented mention of Burg Odenhausen dates back to 1316. For a long time, it was a fief held by the Lords of Odenhausen from the Siegburg Abbey of Michaelsberg. In the Middle Ages, the original motte-and-bailey castle was expanded into a moated castle with an outer and inner bailey. A transformation into a Renaissance complex took place in 1560 under Ludwig von Blankart.
