In Oebisfelde in the Börde district of Saxony-Anhalt stands Oebisfelde Castle, one of Europe's oldest preserved swamp castles. This complex was once strategically located at an Aller river crossing.

History+

The origins of Oebisfelde Castle likely date back to the 10th century, when it was built to protect an important Aller river crossing on a sandbank in the Drömling swamp area. Between 1014 and 1073, the town and castle were first mentioned in a deed of gift as Ysfelde. In 1226, the complex was first referred to as a castle under Wolbertus de Ousfelde and the town as “Ovesfelde”. Another mention of the castle as a castrum appears in 1263.
