Piberstein Castle is situated in Piberstein, a district of the municipality of Ahorn in the Mühlviertel region of Upper Austria. Originally built in the 13th century and expanded around 1620, it later fell into ruin before undergoing renovation starting in 1964, transforming it into a cultural center.

History+

The construction of Piberstein Castle is attributed to the brothers Ruga and Arnold von Piberstein, who served as vassals to the Lords of Griesbach and Waxenberg between 1200 and 1250. Around 1285, Rüdiger and Ottokar von Piberstein are documented as owners. The castle served as a central point for clearing the surrounding forests. After the Piberstein family died out, the castle passed into the possession of Ulrich von Tann and changed hands multiple times, including Zacharias Haderer and Heinrich III von Falkenstein. In 1427, Piberstein withstood a siege by Hussites. The brothers Kaspar and Balthasar von Schallenberg acquired the castle in 1428 after their own seat had been destroyed.
