In the Texingtal-Plankenstein region of Lower Austria, Plankenstein Castle stands at an elevation of approximately 661 meters above sea level. Originally owned by the Plankenstein family, who expanded their heritage in the 15th century, the castle is now a hotel.

History+

Plankenstein Castle was first documented in 1186. It was built by the Plankenstein family, vassals of the Counts of Peilstein. The family name derives from the word "blanc," meaning "from the white stone." In the 15th century, Pankraz von Plankenstein, who was among other things pledge lord of Weitra and administrator of Pöchlarn, acquired property. He had the castle renovated in 1453 but did not reside there himself. Following the peace settlement in the fraternal dispute between Emperor Frederick III and Duke Albrecht VI, in which Pankraz sided with the Emperor, his influence grew. In 1713, the Tinti family acquired the castle.
