Prunn Castle

The first documented mention of Prunn Castle dates back to 1037, naming Wernherus de Prunne as its owner. In 1147, the castle passed to the Lords of Laaber, who contributed to its expansion, erecting the oldest surviving parts such as the keep and the palas. After several changes of ownership, including to Duke Ludwig II of Bavaria and the Fraunberger family, the castle was expanded in the late Gothic style in the 15th century. A possible storming by Duke Albrecht IV in 1491 does not seem to have significantly damaged the structure. In 1567 or 1569, the Prunner Codex, a manuscript of the Nibelungenlied, was discovered at Prunn Castle.
