Pyrmont Castle

Pyrmont Castle was built at the end of the 12th century on Palatinate territory by Kuno von Schönburg. His son Kuno II was the first to call himself 'Lord of Pyrmont', and the first documented mention of the castle dates back to 1225. In 1441, Kuno VI of Pyrmont tried to protect the castle from being divided among his three sons through a will, but this could not prevent inheritance disputes after his death. Heinrich VI of Pyrmont was even excommunicated by the Empire due to these disputes. In the second half of the 15th century, under Heinrich VI, who was elevated to a baron, peace returned. Later, the castle passed to the House of Eltz through the marriage of his daughter Elisabeth to Philipp von Eltz. In the 17th century, further inheritance disputes led to parts of the castle being sold to the Waldbott von Bassenheim family.
