Querfurt Castle

The castle grounds were already settled in the Early Bronze Age, as evidenced by graves of the Aunjetitz culture. The first documented mention as the tithe-paying locality of Curnfurt occurred between 881 and 899, before it was first referred to as a “castellum” in 979. From the 10th century, the castle served as the ancestral seat of the noble lords of Querfurt. The oldest surviving structural elements, such as parts of the inner curtain wall and the granary and armory, also date from this period. In 1004, a castle chapel was endowed and a collegiate church founded, followed by a Romanesque church from 1162. Construction of the “Dicker Heinrich” began in the early 12th century, followed by the Marterturm in the early 13th century and the Pariser Turm in the early 14th century. Around 1350, the outer curtain wall was added. After the death of the last lord of the castle, Bruno IX, in 1496, Querfurt fell to the Archbishopric of Magdeburg. Between 1640 and 1642, the castle changed hands several times during the Thirty Years' War and was subsequently occupied by the Swedes until 1650. From 1663 to 1700, it served as the residence of the Princes of Saxony-Querfurt, before falling to the Electorate of Saxony and then to Prussia in 1815. Extensive renovation and restoration measures took place in the 20th and 21st centuries.
