Rabenstein Castle

The origins of Rabenstein Castle likely date back to the 12th century, when German eastward settlement and the development of the Ore Mountains began. The hilltop castle was first documented in 1336. At that time, it was considerably larger, surrounded by a 180-meter-long curtain wall enclosing an area of two hectares and protected by a moat. In 1375, the Benedictine monastery of Chemnitz acquired the castle from the Lords of Waldenburg, leading to a ten-year feud with the Wettins before the purchase was confirmed in 1396. Following a fire around 1480 that destroyed parts of the complex, reconstruction began in 1483. During the dissolution of the monastery, the castle passed into the possession of the Wettins in 1546, who left it unused, causing it to fall into disrepair.
