Rappottenstein Castle

Around 1150, the castle was founded by Rapoto von Kuenring to secure the possessions of the Kuenring family in the Waldviertel. Rappottenstein played a central role, as it was located in the Kuenring territory and protected a branch of the Peheimsteig, which led from the Danube to Bohemia. Furthermore, it was a link in the chain of defenses along the Kamp, intended to protect the land from Bohemian incursions. After the decline of the Kuenrings, the castle passed to the Lords of Dachsberg in 1305, to the Starhembergs in 1423, and to the Lords of Landau in 1546. Neither rebellious peasants in 1597 nor Swedish troops in 1645 could capture the castle. In 1664, the Counts Abensperg-Traun acquired the complex, which remains in their possession to this day.
