Rauenstein Castle

To be privately owned

Rauenstein Castle is situated in the Rauenstein district of the town Pockau-Lengefeld in the Ore Mountains. Its strategic location once allowed for the monitoring of an important crossing over the Flöha river, a route connecting Freiberg with Annaberg.

History+

The first documented mention of Rauenstein Castle dates back to 1323, though archaeological findings suggest an earlier construction around 1200. Initially, the complex was owned by the Schellenberg family. After several changes of ownership, the castle came into the possession of the Electorate of Saxony in 1567. The administrative district of Rauenstein, established there, was assigned to the Wolkenstein district in 1596. Around 1630, structural modifications were carried out, including the construction of a road tunnel.
