History+
The existence of Reipoltskirchen Castle can be traced back to 1198, when Meffried von Reipoltskirchen was first mentioned as a nobleman associated with the location. However, the first confirmed documentary mention occurred in 1276, when the castle passed into the possession of Philipp von Hohenfels. This family, a collateral line of the Lords of Bolanden, moved their main residence to Reipoltskirchen in 1351 after their ancestral castle was destroyed. In 1401, the castle served Nikolaus Vogt von Hunolstein as a base during a conflict with Duke Karl of Lorraine, who subsequently captured the site. In the early 16th century, under Johann II. von Hohenfels, the castle was expanded into a fortress capable of withstanding firearms. After the Hohenfels line died out in 1602, the castle passed through inheritance to the Swedish Counts of Löwenhaupt.
