Rittersdorf Castle, a moated castle, is located in the Eifel region of Rhineland-Palatinate.

History+

The first documented mention of Rittersdorf Castle dates back to 1263. It is believed that Theoderich von Rittersdorf commissioned its construction, possibly on behalf of St. Maximin's Abbey in Trier and as an sub-bailiff for the Counts of Luxembourg. Its strategic importance likely lay in securing the trade route connecting Trier, Bitburg, Prüm, and Cologne. In 1290, King Rudolf of Habsburg granted permission for the construction of a keep.
