Röthgen Castle

The exact date of Burg Röthgen's origin is not clearly documented. Historical records from the 17th century identify it as the ancestral seat of the Knights of Engelsdorf, who may have resided there as early as the 13th century. A document from 1348 mentions an Edmund von Röthgen. The castle was built as a fief of the Counts of Jülich to protect their possessions in the Voreifel region. A weather vane bearing the year 1514 suggests that Wilhelm von der Horst zu Hurt, married to Margaretha von Engelsdorf, had the complex fundamentally rebuilt at that time. After the male line of the Engelsdorfs died out in 1553, the castle passed to Elisabeth von der Horst zu Hurt.
