In Saxony-Anhalt, between Magdeburg and Tangermünde, lies Rogätz Castle, once a strategically important point on the western bank of the Elbe. Today it houses a museum.

History+

The origins of Rogätz Castle date back to the 10th century, when it was built under the Saxon emperors as a bulwark against Slavic influences. The first documentary mention of the site dates back to 1144. Sovereignty over the castle was disputed between the Margraves of Brandenburg and the Archbishops of Magdeburg, until it was assigned to the Archdiocese of Magdeburg in 1449. From 1369, Rogätz Castle was owned by the von Alvensleben family. Under Joachim I von Alvensleben, the castle experienced a period of humanist culture from 1570 to 1582.
