In Metzerlen-Mariastein in the canton of Solothurn, southwest of Basel, stands Burg Rotberg. The medieval knight's castle on a Jurassic limestone hill on the northern slope of the Blauen in the Birsigtal now serves as a youth hostel.

History+

The origins of Burg Rotberg likely date back to the second third of the 13th century. Its first documented mention was in 1413, when it was inhabited by the lords and knights of Rotberg. With the rise of the Rotberg family and their move to the nearby city of Basel, the castle lost its significance and was abandoned and uninhabitable from 1666 onwards. It fell into disrepair and was often used as a quarry. Between 1934 and 1935, the then dilapidated ruin was rebuilt by a voluntary labor service with the support of donations.
