Burg Rotwasserstelz, a rock castle, is in Hohentengen am Rhein in the Waldshut district, Baden-Württemberg. Its strategic location at the northern bridgehead to the Swiss Kaiserstuhl makes it a historical structure in the region.

History+

The origins of Burg Rotwasserstelz date back to the 12th century when it was built by the Wasserstelz family. It was first mentioned in a document in 1163. In 1185, a Ludwig von Rötteln, who served the Dukes of Zähringen, is mentioned. In 1294, the dominion of Rötteln passed from the Regensbergers to the Diocese of Constance through sale, which had the castle expanded in the same year. As the seat of the chief bailiff of the Kaiserstuhl dominion, which included several surrounding localities, the castle was enfeoffed by the Diocese of Constance. The complex acquired its current appearance in 1787.
