Schneidlingen Castle

The construction of Schneidlingen Castle likely began in the early 14th century. Its first documented mention dates to 1324/25, when it was attributed to the possession of the Bishopric of Halberstadt. During the 14th and 15th centuries, the complex changed hands multiple times through pledges and gradually fell into disrepair. In 1604, the Halberstadt Cathedral Chapter acquired the castle and its associated office in exchange from Duke Heinrich Julius of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Between 1611 and 1620, the core castle and the large outer bailey underwent transformation into a model agricultural estate under the direction of Matthias von Oppen. After expropriation by the communists in 1945, the complex served as a kindergarten and retirement home during the GDR era before falling into decay. Since the mid-1990s, a castle association has been dedicated to its maintenance and restoration.
