In Pullach im Isartal, south of Munich, stands Burg Schwaneck, a 19th-century structure that exudes the charm of a medieval fortress, despite not being a historical castle. It is on a high bank of the Isar River, offering views over the Isar Valley to the Alps.

History+

The origins of Burg Schwaneck date back to the 19th century when the sculptor Ludwig von Schwanthaler, recently ennobled, fulfilled his dream of owning a castle. After its inauguration in 1843, he used the tower, which he called “Burgfried” (keep), for celebrations. Schwanthaler shared the contemporary enthusiasm for the Middle Ages, which was reflected in the construction. After his death in 1848, the property changed hands several times.
